Why does my floor get warmer in some spots?

Your floor can reach higher temperatures in some areas where furniture, area rugs, dog beds or other fixtures are trapping the heat. Click “Read More” for details.

Should I use Self-leveler or Thinset ?

Using self-lever or thinset depends on the type of flooring being installed and preference. 

Once a repair has been completed, can I replace the tile right away?

If I have too much mat or cable, can I cut it?

I nicked the wire slightly; do I need a repair kit?

When slight damage is caused to the wire, a visual assessment needs to be made. Read more.

How long will my system take to heat up?

It depends on a lot of factors, but a classic installation over ¾” plywood with NADWS spaced at 3” would take about 30 minutes to heat from 60F to 80F. Click “Read More” for details. 

How do you stick the insulation boards to the concrete slab ?

You can stick the insulation boards to the concrete slab using regular modified or pre-mixed thin set. We recommend a 1/4 x 1/4” trowel.

How do I check if the cable is working ?

The only way to see if the cable is going to work and is not damaged is to use an ohmmeter to check the resistance between the heating conductors matches what it should be in the manual or on the box.

Need also to check and make sure that there is no resistance to the ground conductor.

Can I connect more than one cable to the thermostat ?

YES: if the total load of the cables does not exceed 15 amps.

Can the cold tail lead be cut?

Yes, you can trim the cold lead but must leave at least 3ft past the factory joint. Click “Read More” for details.

Can I install the electric heating cable directly on top of the plywood ?

YES: wood is a natural insulator, no need of extra insulation.
Exception: if this is a non-insulated crawl space under the plywood, in that case we would recommend the use of insulation boards prior the installation.

Can I install the cable directly on top of a concrete slab ?

NO: we highly recommend the use of insulation boards to prevent heat loss to the slab and improve heat-up time. Without insulation board, the heating system works but it takes a considerable time to reach the desired temperature.

Can I connect one cable to another (series connection) ?

NO: each cable must be individually connected to the thermostat (connection in parallel).

Specialized installation – under Nailed Hardwood

What do I need to prepare for my electric floor heating project?

Should I use a 120V or 240V electric floor heating system?

What is the EMF level of Warmup cables?

Our cable was tested and measured 0.5 mG at 1/2” (a typical distance between the cable and your feet). This measures at 1/200th of the acceptable value of 100 mG as established by the WHO and Intertek/ETL. It therefore complies with EN50366.

 

Can I install a wooden floating floor directly on top of the cable ?

NO: cable must be embedded in thin-set or self-leveling compound. Once dry, the floating wooden floor will be installed on top. Alternatively, select the FOIL heating mats which can be installed without thin set.
